New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India’s passport ranking has shown a notable improvement in the latest Henley & Partners Henley Passport Index 2026. According to the report, the Indian passport has climbed 10 places to reach the 75th position in 2026, up from 85th in 2025.

Despite the rise in ranking, the number of visa-free destinations for Indian citizens has seen slight fluctuations. As per the latest data, Indian passport holders can now travel visa-free to 56 countries. This number stood at 55 in January 2026 and was higher at 57 in 2025. The report also notes that India was ranked 80th in January 2026 and improved by five places within a month to reach 75th.

The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports against 227 global travel destinations. The ranking is based on how many countries a passport holder can enter without obtaining a prior visa. The data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association. The scoring system includes visa-free access, visa-on-arrival, and electronic travel authorization. Simply put, easier entry to more countries leads to a stronger passport ranking.

Meanwhile, there have been changes in visa policies affecting Indian travelers. Iran suspended visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders in November 2025, reportedly due to concerns over fraud and human trafficking. On the other hand, Bolivia introduced an e-visa system for Indian citizens in 2026. Travelers must now apply online, upload documents, and receive approval before departure.
