Leadership change at IndiGo: Former British Airways chief takes charge after Elbers
IndiGo appoints a former British Airways chief as its new leader following Pieter Elbers’ departure.
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): IndiGo has announced a major leadership change, appointing aviation veteran Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. The decision comes weeks after the sudden resignation of former CEO Pieter Elbers, which had surprised the aviation industry.
Walsh, who currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association, is expected to take charge after his term concludes on July 31. Subject to regulatory approvals he is likely to assume full responsibilities at IndiGo in early August. The airline confirmed that the transition could take place by August 3 or earlier.
With a distinguished career in global aviation, Walsh has previously led British Airways and International Airlines Group, which operates multiple international carriers. His extensive leadership experience is expected to play a key role in IndiGo’s next phase of expansion and growth.
Welcoming the appointment, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia expressed confidence in Walsh’s leadership. He said the airline is entering a crucial growth phase and described Walsh as a visionary leader with strong global insight and operational expertise capable of steering IndiGo to greater heights.
