Impeachment Probe into Justice Verma Over Unaccounted Cash, Lok Sabha Speaker Constitutes 3 Member Committee for Investigation
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Taking forward the impeachment process against Justice Yashwant Verma, the judge of Allahabad High Court, who is embroiled in the 'cash scandal' case, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced the formation of a three-member inquiry committee. This committee will investigate the allegations against Justice Verma.
This high-level committee constituted by the Lok Sabha Speaker includes a Supreme Court judge, a High Court judge and a senior legal expert. The members of the committee include Supreme Court Justice Arvind Kumar, Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court Justice Maninder Mohan Shrivastava and renowned legal expert B.V. Acharya.
This high-profile case came to light on March 14, 2025 this year, when a fire broke out at Justice Verma's government residence in Delhi. After the fire was extinguished, a huge amount of burnt cash was recovered from the spot, after which there was a stir in the judiciary. At the time of the incident, Justice Verma was working in the Delhi High Court and was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
Last month, Lok Sabha MPs from several parties including Congress, BJP, JDU and TDP together submitted a memorandum to Speaker Om Birla and demanded an impeachment motion against Justice Verma. Earlier, based on the report of an internal inquiry committee, the then Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna also wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommending impeachment against Justice Verma. Now further action on the impeachment motion in the House will be decided on the basis of the report of the inquiry committee.
