Kakinada (The Uttam Hindu): A devastating explosion followed by a fire at a firecracker factory in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district has reportedly claimed at least 18 lives. Several others sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to nearby hospitals.

According to initial reports, a powerful blast occurred inside the factory premises, after which flames quickly engulfed the entire building. The explosion was so intense that its sound was heard in nearby areas, triggering panic in the locality. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at a firecracker unit located between Vetlapalem and G. Medupadu in the Samarlakota mandal. The impact of the explosion was so severe that workers’ bodies were reportedly thrown hundreds of feet away into nearby fields. The factory is said to belong to the family of Adapa Nani, a resident of Pedapudi Road. Thick smoke covered the entire area after the blast.

The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown. Around 30 workers were present in the factory at the time of the incident. Authorities have reached the site and ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident. The district is in mourning following the tragedy, and compensation for the victims’ families is expected to be announced soon.

Majority of victims were women

Reports indicate that most of those who lost their lives were women. More than 30 workers were on duty when the explosion occurred. Due to the large quantity of explosive material stored inside, the fire continues to burn. Repeated minor explosions are also hampering rescue operations. Five people have been critically injured and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. It is feared that some individuals may still be trapped under the debris.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep grief over the incident and directed concerned ministers and senior officials to visit the site and monitor the situation. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway.
