Guwahati/Imphal (The Uttam Hindu): Torrential monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in many states of Northeast India including Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. So far 25 people have died due to flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains for the last two days. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out rapidly by the administration.

Many houses were damaged in a landslide in the state capital Guwahati. Five people lost their lives in this accident, including three members of the same family. Due to continuous rain in the hills, the soil became loose, due to which a large part slid and fell on the houses. Apart from this, two people died in Golaghat district and one in Lakhimpur due to drowning in the flood.

Floods have taken a terrible form in Arunachal Pradesh bordering China. Seven people died when a vehicle was swept away, while two people drowned in another incident. A total of 9 people have been confirmed dead in the state so far. 8 people have lost their lives due to rain and landslides in Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya during the last 24 hours. According to officials, these states are receiving intermittent heavy rains, causing sudden floods and landslides.

The situation is also serious in Manipur. The continuous rain for three days in the capital Imphal has completely disrupted life. There is waterlogging in many parts of the city. The administration has appealed to the people living on the banks of the Imphal river to immediately move to safer places and a flood warning has been issued. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of more rain in most parts of the Northeast for the next few days. An alert has been issued in all the states and the administration has been instructed to remain alert.
