PM Modi's lok sabha address cancelled amid opposition uproar, house adjourned till tomorrow
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The war of words between the ruling party and the opposition escalated into a new "battle" on Wednesday during Parliament's budget session. The controversy, which began over books, heated up the House to such an extent that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled speech at 5 p.m. was disrupted. Following a day of uproar and chaos, the Lok Sabha proceedings have been adjourned until Thursday.
Naravane's book vs books on the Gandhi family
The main source of controversy in the House was a book by former Army Chief MM Naravane. Rahul Gandhi, citing this book, attempted to corner the government on the issue of Chinese incursions. In response, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also came to the House fully prepared. He mentioned some books written on the Gandhi family and claimed that many objectionable things were written in them. Dubey's statement erupted as if a volcano had erupted in the House. The opposition strongly objected to this and started a massive uproar, forcing the proceedings to be interrupted.
The fight reached the Speaker's chamber
Angered by Nishikant Dubey's statement, MPs from opposition parties went straight to Speaker Om Birla's chamber and raised slogans there. The opposition argued that when Rahul Gandhi was prevented from speaking on one book, why was a BJP MP allowed to speak on other books? Congress and other opposition MPs registered their protest in the Speaker's office. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah met PM Modi in Parliament House and later held a meeting with Speaker Om Birla, in which Nishikant Dubey was also present.
'If the PM had come, I would have given him the book'
Amidst this entire development, Rahul Gandhi continued to taunt the government and the Prime Minister. Reaching Parliament with Naravane's book in hand, Rahul Gandhi told the media that he didn't expect the Prime Minister to attend the House today. He added that if the Prime Minister had come to Parliament, he would have personally presented him with this book. Through this book, Rahul Gandhi has been continuously questioning the government's policies on border security and China. For now, this political battle over the book shows no signs of abating.
