Supreme Court Orders EC: Publish Names of 65 Lakh Removed Voters
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu)- While hearing the petitions challenging the special intensive revision of voter lists in Bihar, the Supreme Court said that if 22 lakh people have died, then why is it not disclosed at the booth level? During the hearing in the Supreme Court, the Election Commission told that it will make public the names of about 65 lakh voters removed across the state on a booth-wise basis.
Justice Suryakant said that the Election Commission has said that out of the 65 lakh names removed from the list, 22 lakh people have died. If 22 lakh people have died, then why is it not disclosed at the booth level? We do not want the rights of citizens to depend on political parties. The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to make public the list of about 65 lakh people excluded or removed from the draft voter list of Bihar, along with the reason for their removal, on the website of the District Election Officer. The apex court has also directed the Election Commission to give it wide publicity through local newspapers, Doordarshan, radio or any official social media platform.
The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to take compliance reports from all booth level and district level officers and file them. The case will be heard in the Supreme Court on August 22.
