Imphal (The Uttam Hindu): In view of the tense situation that suddenly arose in Manipur late Saturday night, the state government has suspended internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching districts for five days. This decision was taken after the arrest of a Meitei community leader named Arambai Tenggol.

Ashok Kumar said that this decision has been taken without prior notice in an emergency situation with the aim of maintaining law and order and preventing rumors. The order also warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who violate the instructions.
The administration fears that some anti-social elements may share provocative messages, photos and videos through social media, which may worsen the situation. Protests broke out in Imphal East and West districts after the arrest of Arambai Tenggol on Saturday night. Hundreds of people in Kwakaithel and Uripok areas protested against the arrest by burning tires and old furniture on the streets and demanded the release of the leader.
The administration has deployed additional security forces to control the situation. However, it has not been made clear yet who the arrested person is and what charges have been leveled against him. The administration has appealed to the general public to maintain peace and not trust any misleading information.
