Sonitpur (The Uttam Hindu): A devastating road accident in Assam’s Sonitpur district late Sunday night claimed the lives of seven people. The accident occurred on National Highway 15 when an ambulance collided head-on with a truck.

According to reports, the ambulance was carrying a patient and family members from the Tulip Tea Garden area to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. The accident took place in the Dhekiajuli police station area during the journey.

Sonitpur SSP Barun Purkayastha said that six people died on the spot, while two others were critically injured. The injured were rushed to the hospital, where one more person succumbed to injuries, taking the death toll to seven.

Police and emergency services reached the spot immediately after receiving information and launched rescue operations. Traffic, which was disrupted due to the accident, was later restored.

In a separate incident, four youths lost their lives in Mandla district. The accident occurred near Bhainswahi village under Bijadandi police station area on Saturday night around 8 pm. The victims were travelling on a motorcycle from Paudi village to Bhainswahi when the bike lost control due to a pothole on a bridge and fell off. All four were seriously injured and later died.
