90 percent of families receiving zero electricity bills
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): A significant relief has been extended to households across Punjab, with nearly 90 percent of families now receiving zero electricity bills under the free power scheme. Through the provision of 300 units of free electricity per month, electricity expenses have ceased to remain an economic burden for a large section of the population.
The zero-bill facility was introduced within weeks of the formation of the Punjab Government and was formally implemented from July 1, 2022. Since then, the scheme has been consistently extended to domestic consumers as well as farmers, offering wide-ranging benefits across both urban and rural areas.
According to data from the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), the state has more than 73 lakh domestic electricity consumers, all of whom receive electricity bills on a bi-monthly basis. As per official records, approximately 90 percent of households are currently being issued zero electricity bills under the scheme.
To ensure the smooth implementation of this initiative, timely subsidies are being released to PSPCL by the Punjab Government. During January, February, and March of the current year, a subsidy amounting to crore was provided. Despite the scale of subsidies, PSPCL has continued to remain financially stable and profitable.
In the financial year 2023—24, PSPCL recorded a profit of 004.94 crore. For the same financial year, a total subsidy of crore was released to PSPCL up to December 19, 2023. In the financial year 2022—23, subsidies amounting to X 20,200 crore were provided by the state government.
In addition, an investment of crore has been made to strengthen Punjab's power infrastructure. This investment has been aimed at eliminating power cuts completely and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for all categories of consumers.
Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Mann has stated that electricity is not a luxury but a basic right of every citizen. The policy, it has been emphasized, is not only providing immediate financial relief but is also steering Punjab towards long-term energy stability and self-reliance.
With household electricity costs reduced to zero, families are now able to redirect their savings towards education, healthcare, and other essential needs. The widespread implementation of the scheme has resulted in well-lit homes across the state, reflecting improved living standards and growing public confidence.
