Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu): Kulwant Singh alias Gopa, a key member of the Sonu Khatri gang, was arrested after a police encounter in the Foldiwal area on Sunday. The accused sustained a bullet injury in his leg during the exchange of fire. Police also recovered two illegal pistols and a motorcycle from his possession.

According to officials, the operation was launched after receiving specific intelligence about his presence. When the police team surrounded the area and attempted to arrest him, Gopa opened fire. In response, the police retaliated, and during the brief gunfight, he was injured and overpowered.

Gopa, a resident of Nawanshahr, had been absconding for a long time and was wanted in connection with a shooting incident at a sweet shop in Phagwara earlier this year. Investigations suggest he was working on instructions from gangsters based abroad and was involved in extortion and other criminal activities.

Police records show that he is facing around 18 serious cases including attempted murder, robbery and violations of the Arms Act. He has been admitted to a civil hospital under tight security, while efforts are ongoing to trace other members of the gang.
