Multi-Crore Property Scam Busted in Khanna, IT Department Cracks Down on Tehsildar Offices

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Khanna is at the centre of a major storm after the Intelligence and Criminal Investigation (I&CI) wing of the Income Tax Department uncovered large-scale irregularities in property transactions worth crores of rupees. In a dramatic survey at the Tehsildar office, investigators found that mandatory details of high-value deals had been deliberately kept off the radar.

According to sources, a massive network of suppressed property transactions has come to light across Punjab. Deals worth several crores went unreported to the Income Tax Department, raising serious questions about collusion, corruption, and accountability at the grassroots level of revenue administration.

The probe team reportedly matched state registry software data with records submitted by Tehsildars — and the mismatch exposed the scam. Officials say that instead of providing complete details, including PAN and Aadhaar of buyers and sellers for deals above ₹30 lakh, several Tehsildars have been filing false or incomplete information. By omitting PAN details, which are the backbone of financial tracking, they effectively shielded dubious deals from scrutiny, making it impossible for authorities to verify the sources of funds or monitor capital gains.

This is not an isolated case. Similar “surveys” and crackdowns have been conducted in Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Mohali in recent months. Insiders claim that the rot runs deep, and the Khanna case may only be the tip of the iceberg.

The I-T Department has vowed to pursue the matter aggressively. Alongside enforcement raids, it is also holding awareness programmes for Tehsildars — but the recent findings have cast a dark shadow on the credibility of the system.

With property deals worth hundreds of crores slipping through official records, the Department’s warning is clear those who bend the rules will not escape the dragnet.
