Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab’s Vigilance Bureau on Friday arrested patwari Sarbjit Singh, posted at Circle Golward in village Bala Chak, district Tarn Taran, after he was caught red-handed taking a ₹25,000 bribe.

According to the Vigilance Bureau spokesperson, the complainant wanted to sell his land and applied for a copy of the land transfer document (fard). He was shocked to learn that the land was not registered in his name but in someone else’s.

To correct this record, he approached patwari Sarbjit Singh. The patwari allegedly demanded ₹1,00,000 to fix the land entry. Later, the amount was negotiated to ₹30,000, and the accused had already taken the first instalment of ₹5,000.

Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau set up a trap and arrested the patwari while accepting the second instalment of ₹25,000 in the presence of two government witnesses.

A case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Vigilance Bureau police station, Range Amritsar. The patwari will be produced in court tomorrow, and further investigation is underway.
