Punjab Government's Big Relief for Cancer Patients: Treatment to Be Provided Free of Cost
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): In view of the rising number of cancer cases in Punjab, the state government has taken a significant decision to provide free Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans to its citizens. This crucial step aims to help in the early detection and timely treatment of cancer, especially benefiting economically weaker sections who often cannot afford this costly test.
Cancer cases are steadily increasing across the state, and timely diagnosis remains a major challenge due to the high cost of essential tests like PET scans. Recognizing this, the government has decided to offer this diagnostic service free of cost to the people of Punjab.
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh shared this development, stating that the plan has been finalized and an official announcement will follow soon. The scheme is expected to be launched from October 2, 2025 and preparations are underway, including the empanelment of both government and select private hospitals to ensure wider access.
It is worth noting that the Punjab government already runs various schemes to provide financial assistance to cancer patients. The addition of free PET scans is expected to strengthen cancer care services in the state and improve survival rates through early intervention.
