Big breakthrough in Rana Balachauriya murder case as Mohali police neutralise gangster Karan
Mohali (The Uttam Hindu): Mohali Police have achieved a major success in the murder of kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauriya. In this sensational and controversial case, police have killed a gangster in an encounter. Gangster Karan, the main accused and shooter, was killed during the operation in the Kharar area.

He is wanted in this case as well. The police had arrested him two days ago from West Bengal in the case of Rana Balachauriya's murder. 30-year-old Rana Balachauriya was shot dead during a kabaddi tournament in Sohana, Mohali last month. Since this murder, there was constant pressure on the police and several teams were formed to arrest the accused.
According to police, the encounter took place at night in the Kharar area. During the encounter, gangster Karan opened fire on police, and was killed in the ensuing firefight. Karan was the main shooter in the murder.
Rana Balachauriya was murdered on December 15, 2025, during a kabaddi tournament held in the Sohana area of Sas Nagar. The attackers approached him under the pretext of taking a selfie and then opened fire. Another accused in the case, Harpinder Singh alias Middu, was previously killed in a police encounter in December.
As part of the investigation into the murder, the Punjab Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force arrested two shooters and an associate from Howrah, West Bengal. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that the operation was carried out as part of a joint intelligence-based operation involving the Sikkim Police, Mumbai Police, West Bengal Special Task Force, Howrah Police, and central agencies.
The arrested accused were identified as Karan Pathak, alias Karan Defaulter, a resident of Amritsar, Tarandeep Singh, a resident of Barhewal, Ludhiana, and Akashdeep, a resident of Upala, Tarn Taran. With these arrests, the number of accused in this case increased to five.
