Strike called off: Punjab Roadways buses resume service, commuters relieved
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu) – The five-day strike by Roadways, PNB, and PRTC contract workers in Punjab ended today. Following talks between the striking workers and the administration, the union announced the end of the strike.
Gurpreet Singh, vice president of the union in Ludhiana, stated that the protest was against the high-handedness and arbitrariness of corporate companies. According to Gurpreet Singh, during the strike, police detained several employees and filed cases against them under serious sections such as 307. Meanwhile, management issued a dictatorial directive that employees involved in the protests would face departmental action and be fired.
Union leaders stated that the protest was primarily to demand the release of imprisoned colleagues and the reinstatement of all dismissed employees. After continued negotiations, management agreed to these key demands, leading the union to end the strike. As soon as the strike ended, approximately 1,600 buses, which had been parked at the depot for the past five days, resumed operation, providing significant relief to passengers. The union maintains that the struggle is far from over and they will continue to advocate for employees' rights.
