Team India Holds Upper Hand Against Sri Lanka in T20 Format

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Team India will face Sri Lanka in the Super-4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025 on Friday. The match will be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Looking at the T20 history between India and Sri Lanka, the two teams have played a total of 32 matches since 2009, out of which India has won 21 games, while Sri Lanka has won 9 matches. One match ended in a tie, and one was abandoned.

In the Asia Cup T20 format, India and Sri Lanka have played only two matches so far, with both teams holding a 1-1 record.


On 1 March 2016, the two countries faced each other for the first time in the Asia Cup (T20) at the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, where India won by 5 wickets. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 138 runs for 9 wickets, which India chased down in 19.2 overs.

Later, on 6 September 2022, the teams met in a Super-4 match where Sri Lanka avenged their previous loss by winning the game by 6 wickets. India batted first and scored 173 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs, with captain Rohit Sharma contributing 72 runs. Sri Lanka chased the target with one ball to spare, thanks to a crucial 97-run partnership between openers Pathum Nissanka (52) and Kusal Mendis (57) in 11.1 overs.

In Asia Cup 2025, Team India has won all five matches so far, including two victories over Pakistan. India will face Pakistan in the final on Sunday.


Sri Lanka, after winning all three of their Group-B matches, lost their first two Super-4 games, effectively ending their title hopes.
