Banana Peel Found Packed With Health Benefits: Studies Reveal Antioxidant & Antimicrobial Power
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Bananas have long been considered a staple of daily diets, offering both taste and energy. But while most people discard the peel as waste, new scientific research suggests banana peels may actually hold extraordinary health benefits.
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, banana peels contain powerful natural compounds that can significantly benefit human health. Rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, the peel helps flush out harmful toxins from the body.
A Japanese research team led by scientist Someya discovered that banana peels contain gallocatechin, a potent antioxidant that helps cleanse the body from within and strengthens disease resistance. Meanwhile, a study conducted in Indonesia highlighted that peels are abundant in flavonoids, tannins, and saponins—all of which fight against dangerous free radicals. These free radicals are known to damage cells and increase the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer.
The antibacterial properties of banana peels are equally remarkable. Researchers found that peel extracts can combat harmful bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus, which are often responsible for stomach infections, fever, and other diseases. The compounds were also shown to fight bacteria that cause dental and gum problems.
In addition, peels contain gallic acid, ferulic acid, and catechins, which help fight fungal infections. Intriguingly, even when banana peels were used as a natural dye for fabrics, their antibacterial properties remained intact, helping protect cloth surfaces from bacterial contamination.
Experts believe this discovery could open new doors in nutrition, medicine, and even sustainable industries. What was once thrown in the trash may soon be recognized as a hidden superfood.
