Purnia(The Uttam Hindu): In a shocking and brutal incident, five members of the same family were burned alive in Bihar’s Purnia district after being accused of practicing witchcraft. The horrifying crime has sent shockwaves through the region and sparked outrage across the state.

The victims have been identified as Babu Lal Oraon, his wife Sita Devi, mother Kato Devi, son Manjeet Kumar, and daughter-in-law Rani Devi. According to police, the attackers first beat the five victims with sticks until they were nearly unconscious. The mob then poured petrol on them and set them on fire inside their own home, which was later found charred.

Investigations revealed that a local resident’s son had been unwell for some time, and some villagers suspected black magic. The village head, Nakul Oraon, reportedly convened a meeting of around 250 villagers, where it was decided that Sita Devi was a “witch” responsible for the illness. The enraged crowd dragged the entire family to the village center, where they were mercilessly beaten and burned alive.

The family’s son, Sonu, managed to escape the mob and reached his maternal grandparents’ house, where he alerted police about the gruesome murders. Authorities recovered the burned bodies, which had been hidden in a nearby marsh, and launched a manhunt for the attackers. Purnia Sadar SDPO Pankaj Kumar Sharma confirmed that two suspects have been arrested so far, and strict action will be taken against everyone involved in this horrific crime.
