Indian Railways to Impose Baggage Limits Like Airlines – Extra Luggage to Attract Fines!
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Indian Railways is set to introduce two major changes to make travel smoother for passengers and increase its revenue. Soon, like air travel, there will be a fixed baggage allowance for train journeys, and passengers exceeding the limit may have to pay fines. Additionally, railway stations are being modernized with plans to open branded stores similar to those seen at airports.
Under the new policy, electronic weighing and measuring machines will be installed at stations. If a passenger’s luggage exceeds the permitted limit, they will be charged an additional fee or fine. According to sources, the baggage allowance will vary depending on the travel class.
General Class: 35 kg per passenger
Sleeper & Third AC: 40 kg per passenger
Second AC: 50 kg per passenger
First AC: 70 kg per passenger
Railways clarified that this limit applies per passenger. For instance, if two people are traveling in Sleeper Class, they can collectively carry up to 80 kg of luggage without extra charges. Officials stated that this step aims to make travel more comfortable and organized.
To enhance passenger experience, major branded shops will soon be available at railway stations. Plans include outlets for clothing, travel accessories, electronics, and more. These stores will be allotted through tenders, helping Railways generate additional revenue. The initiative seeks to give stations an airport-like feel with world-class facilities. Reportedly, this baggage rule will first be implemented in the Prayagraj Zone. After successful execution, it will be rolled out across the entire Indian railway network.
