New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): An expert team of doctors at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has demonstrated a unique example of medical science. They successfully reconstructed a new toe from a young man's amputated toe and implanted it in his hand.

The team from the Plastic, Cosmetic and Hand Microsurgery Department of the hospital performed this complex surgery on a 20-year-old youth, who had lost his left leg (below the knee) and left thumb in a road accident.

The young man was brought to the hospital immediately after the accident, where the trauma team began immediate treatment. Examination revealed severe injuries to the patient's foot and thumb, making them impossible to reattach. With the permission of the patient's family, doctors made the difficult decision—using the other toe from the amputated foot to create a new thumb for the hand.

This complex surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. Mahesh Mangle, Head of the Department of Plastic, Cosmetic and Microsurgery at the hospital. The team also included Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala (Consultant, Head and Microsurgeon), Dr. Arjun Krishna (DNB Resident), and Dr. Rishika Bachani (DNB Resident).

According to doctors, the surgery was successful in not only restoring the functionality of the hand but also improving the patient's quality of life by using the limb that could not be saved.

Microsurgery was introduced to the Plastic Surgery Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 1981. Department Head Dr. Mangale explained that since then, the department has become a leading center for reimplantation in the country
