New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The lavish wedding of Gurugram's popular automobile YouTuber Arun Panwar is currently the subject of discussion on social media. Arun Panwar shared videos of several wedding rituals on Instagram, which are rapidly going viral. One of these videos has sparked a new controversy, in which the wedding ceremony is announced to be given ₹7.1 million in cash and 21 tolas of gold. The video describes this as a "donation," not a dowry.

In the video, a man is heard announcing from a stage that this is not dowry, but a voluntary donation. He then lists the entire amount of gold and cash, including a gold chain, bracelets, rings for the groom, jewelry for other family members, and a total of 21 tolas of gold and ₹7.1 million in cash.

The video sparked a heated debate on social media. Many users criticized it, linking it to the dowry system, while others called it a tradition and a voluntary donation.

Citing the dowry law, the criticising users said that taking cash or gold in marriage, no matter by what name it is called, falls under the category of dowry. Some people, citing the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, called it a legal crime and demanded action against the YouTuber. One user wrote that “just calling it donation does not make dowry legal.” At the same time, some users also raised questions on Arun Panwar's wife. They said that despite studying medicine, supporting a practice like dowry is beyond comprehension.

However, many people have expressed support for Arun Panwar on social media. Supporters say this happened with the family's mutual consent and willingness, and calling it forced dowry is wrong. Some users took it lightly and made sarcastic comments.
