Beijing/Tehran (The Uttam Hindu): China has highlighted its crucial role in facilitating a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States revealing extensive diplomatic efforts behind the agreement. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that continuous engagement and coordination with multiple countries helped ease rising tensions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi disclosed that he held 26 phone conversations with global leaders to push for de-escalation. Reports suggest that in the final phase, China applied diplomatic pressure on Tehran encouraging it to enter negotiations and agree to the ceasefire. During the same period US President Donald Trump had issued a strong warning over the Strait of Hormuz, while military activity in the region further heightened global concerns.

While countries like Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, and Pakistan attempted mediation earlier, China’s sustained diplomatic outreach proved decisive. Experts believe that along with promoting peace, China’s efforts were also driven by strategic and economic interests particularly its dependence on Gulf oil supplies and its aim to project itself as a key global power in resolving international conflicts.
