Indiscriminate firing rocks city, 10 killed and several injured
Johannesburg (The Uttam Hindu): A horrifying incident has emerged from Johannesburg, South Africa. Unidentified gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on civilians in the Bakersdale area, sending the entire area reverberating with gunfire. Ten people died on the spot in the fierce gunfire, while 10 others were seriously injured. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where their condition remains critical.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers targeted a crowd on the streets without warning. The bloody incident occurred in Bakersdale, about 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. Police investigations have revealed that the shooting occurred near an illegal liquor den. The area is a poor settlement near some of the country's major gold mines. Police are currently unsure of the motive behind the attack and are conducting raids to find the attackers.
This is the second major shooting incident in South Africa this month, raising serious questions about the law and order situation there. Earlier, on the 6th of this month, a similar attack on a hostel near the capital, Pretoria, claimed the lives of 12 people, including a three-year-old child. It is worth noting that South Africa, with a population of 63 million, has a very alarming crime rate, and the country is listed among the countries with the highest murder rates in the world.
