Iran grieves once more: Mansoureh, Ali Khamenei's wife, passes away from injuries sustained in an attack
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Iran has been struck by another tragedy amid ongoing attacks by the United States and Israel. After the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his wife Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh has also died after suffering serious injuries during recent strikes in Tehran. Iranian state media confirmed the development, stating that she had been undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in the attack. Mansoureh largely stayed away from public life and had been married to Khamenei since 1964, and the couple had six children.
The large-scale joint strikes on Tehran caused heavy casualties and major destruction. The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of several members of Khamenei’s family as well as senior Iranian officials. Following these developments, Iran declared 40 days of national mourning, while tensions across the country have continued to rise.
After Khamenei’s death, Iran’s leadership responsibilities have temporarily been handed to a three-member committee that includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Eje'i and senior cleric Alireza Arafi. Meanwhile, Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the death of his predecessor. Iranian leaders have vowed strong retaliation for the attacks, while US President Donald Trump warned that any major action against the United States would be met with a powerful response.
