New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit. However, Carney faced sharp questions in his own country, as a reporter referenced the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and questioned the decision to invite PM Modi.

Carney responded clearly and concisely to the questions. He stated that the support of certain countries is crucial, . and that India is now the world’s fifth-largest economy. Refusing to comment on Nijjar's killing, he said that a legal process is underway and that any interference would be inappropriate. He emphasized that Canada adheres to the rule of law and that its investigative agencies operate independently.

Answering the journalist’s question, Carney added that he does not believe PM Modi had any involvement in the matter.

He said, “There is a legal process in Canada that is well underway, and it would not be appropriate to comment on it.”

Carney also mentioned that India is not only a large economy, but also the world’s most populous country and a crucial hub for global supply chains. Dialogue with India is essential in areas like energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. As the G7 Summit is currently being held in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Modi has accepted the invitation to participate in the event.
