New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, a shocking case has emerged in the United States. A trial has begun in an American court against Asif Merchant, a 47-year-old Pakistani citizen. He is accused of plotting the assassination of top American leaders with alleged links to Iran. According to the allegations, former US President Donald Trump was among the key targets in the conspiracy.

According to prosecutors, Asif Merchant arrived in the United States in April 2024 and attempted to arrange a contract killing before the presidential election scheduled for November. For this purpose, he contacted a person whom he believed could help him find professional assassins.

Person hired turned out to be an FBI informant

During the investigation, it was revealed that the individual Merchant contacted later became an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. With his help, Merchant’s conversations were recorded. In court, prosecutors said that Merchant paid $5,000 in advance to two individuals whom he believed were contract killers, but they were actually undercover FBI agents.

Investigators said that the alleged assassination plot included several prominent American leaders. Apart from Donald Trump, the names of then US President Joe Biden and former presidential candidate and ex-US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley were also mentioned.

What the accused said in court

According to US media reports, during his court appearance Asif Merchant claimed that he did not want to carry out the conspiracy willingly. He said he feared for the safety of his family living in Tehran, and alleged that he became involved in the plan under pressure.

Possible link to revenge for Soleimani’s killing

The United States Department of Justice has alleged that the conspiracy may have been linked to revenge for the killing of Iran’s top military commander Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was killed in a US military strike in 2020, an event that significantly escalated tensions between the United States and Iran.

Investigating agencies are treating the case as a serious matter related to national security and are continuing a detailed investigation.
