Moscow (The Uttam Hindu): The corridors of international politics are buzzing with activity. After negotiating with the United States in Alaska on its own terms, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now seen strengthening his position further with the possibility of the next trilateral meeting in Hungary, a country considered close to Moscow. Analysts believe that if this meeting takes place in Budapest, it will mark another major diplomatic victory for Putin.

The choice of Hungary makes the development especially intriguing. Hungary is a member of the US-led NATO alliance, traditionally seen as Russia’s adversary. Yet, since the beginning of the Ukraine war, Hungary has maintained a relatively soft stance toward Russia and has openly supported Moscow on several occasions. Budapest has consistently urged Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire and engage in dialogue with Russia.

In this context, holding a trilateral dialogue on the soil of a pro-Russia NATO member creates a highly favorable situation for Putin. The Russian President enjoys strong ties with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has managed to balance relations with both Washington and Moscow but has shown a clear tilt toward Russia.

This development comes at a time when former US President Donald Trump is reportedly pushing for a solution that would require Ukraine to cede parts of its territory, including Crimea, to Russia for a permanent resolution of the war. If that happens, it could be seen as a historic step toward Putin’s vision of a “Greater Russia.” For now, all eyes are on whether Budapest will officially be confirmed as the venue for the upcoming talks.
