Taliban launches deadly attack on Pakistan, claims 40 soldiers killed
Kabul/Islamabad (The Uttam Hindu): Amid tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, reports of attacks and retaliation between the two sides emerged overnight. Security forces were reportedly attacked in the Bajaur district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Initial reports claimed 40 soldiers were killed, although the official casualty figures could not be independently confirmed.
Bajaur district, bordering Afghanistan, has long been affected by militant activity. The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for several attacks on security forces within Pakistan in the past. Various claims are being made regarding the latest attacks, but not all of them have been independently verified.
The Afghan side also claimed cross-border retaliation. Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Inayatullah Khawarazmi said the action was in response to alleged attacks from Pakistan. Some reports claimed Islamabad and other military installations were targeted, though these claims have not been confirmed by Pakistan.
The two countries have previously traded accusations of airstrikes and drone strikes along the border. The recent incidents have further escalated tensions in the region. There are reports of heavy gunfire and casualties on both sides, but official and independent sources offer differing accounts of the situation.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, held a telephone conversation with Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional stability, and the current situation between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
During the talks, emphasis was placed on de-escalation, prioritizing dialogue, and peaceful resolution of issues. The Saudi side pledged to continue diplomatic efforts to promote regional stability, while the Afghan side described its actions as defensive and reiterated the need for a solution through dialogue. Official statements and claims continue to exchange views between the two countries regarding the current situation. Independent confirmation and detailed information are awaited.
