Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Former US President Donald Trump said that efforts led by the United States to revive Venezuela’s oil sector were aimed at preventing China and Russia from expanding their influence over the country’s energy resources. Speaking at the White House with top executives from American and international oil companies, Trump said timely US action stopped China or Russia from quickly taking control of Venezuela’s energy assets.

Trump stated that without US intervention, China or Russia would have already moved into Venezuela. He added that while the United States is open to selling oil to China and other countries, control over oil production in Venezuela must remain aligned with American interests. Trump said the US is open for business both domestically and in Venezuela.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that under the previous administration, Venezuela had turned into a hub for hostile forces. He said it was not in America’s national interest or security to have a neighboring country under the control of a person facing serious allegations, including drug trafficking.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Venezuela’s decline has had an impact beyond its borders. He noted that widespread corruption and economic collapse have created a major crisis for the Venezuelan people. Trump said US military action created pressure without engaging in a prolonged war. He explained that military strength was used not to fire bullets, but to restrict Venezuela’s oil supply.

Trump added that this strategy is similar to how the United States counters the influence of China and Russia in other key regions. He made it clear that the US would not allow China or Russia to take control of Venezuela. Latin America, he said, has always been strategically important for the United States, especially in terms of energy security and global geopolitical competition.
