Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Pete Hegseth has directed General Randy A. George to step down and retire with immediate effect, a move that signals a significant administrative reshuffle within the Pentagon amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

In an official statement, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that General George is retiring immediately as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army. The Defense Department expressed gratitude for his decades of service and extended best wishes for his retirement.

Senior US military and defense officials confirmed that Hegseth had asked George to vacate the position. He will be replaced on an interim basis by General Christopher LaNeve, who will serve as acting chief until the Senate confirms a permanent successor.

General George had assumed office in September 2023 and still had around one-and-a-half years remaining in his typical four-year tenure. His exit makes him the latest senior military official to step down since Hegseth took charge.

According to reports, the changes extend beyond a single position. Two other Army generals, including senior officials responsible for training and chaplaincy, have also reportedly been removed.

The move has triggered sharp political reactions. Congressman Eugene Vindman criticized the decision, calling General George an outstanding public servant and soldier. He alleged that the removal was politically motivated, suggesting that leadership preferences were influencing key military appointments.

Vindman also questioned the Pentagon leadership, stating that concerns about leadership quality should be directed at the Defense Secretary rather than officials who have served the nation with distinction.

The reshuffle comes at a time of heightened strain within the US military establishment. Recently, Hegseth had also sparked controversy by intervening in an incident involving an Apache helicopter crew. After lifting a suspension in that case, he stated on social media, “No punishment. No investigation. Move forward, patriots.”

The Pentagon has not provided detailed reasons for General George’s removal. The position of Army Chief of Staff is among the most senior military roles in the United States, responsible for overseeing training, readiness, and operations. Such high-level changes are typically carried out after extensive consultations and Senate oversight.
