Washington(The Uttam Hindu):  US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, imposing an additional 25% tariff on India. This decision was made in response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil, which the US views as contributing to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

After imposing 25% extra tariff, the total tariff on India has now become 50%. He signed an executive order related to this on Thursday. This order will come into effect from 27 August. Earlier, he had announced a 25% tariff on 30 July. Trump has taken this action on India because of the purchase of Russian oil. He had said a day earlier that India is helping Russia in continuing the Ukraine war by purchasing Russian oil.

He claimed that India is buying Russian oil and fuelling the Russian war machine. On the other hand, India has called the threat of additional tariffs "unfair". At the same time, Russia also reacted strongly and called such US pressure tactics "illegal". It supported India and criticized Trump's threats to increase tariffs on New Delhi for buying oil from Moscow, saying, "Sovereign nations should have the right to choose their trading partners." At the same time, a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that like any major economy, "India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security."
