New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): After childbirth, a woman’s body goes through several physical and hormonal changes. Weight gain, weakness, skin pigmentation, and rapid hair fall after delivery are commonly observed. Hair fall after childbirth affects a large number of women, but many are unaware of the exact reasons behind it. Understanding the causes and timely care can help control this problem effectively.
One of the primary reasons is hormonal change. After delivery, the level of estrogen in the body drops significantly. During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep hair in the growth phase for a longer time, but once hormone levels decline after childbirth, hair becomes weak at the roots and starts falling rapidly.
The second major reason is nutritional deficiency. After delivery, most of the focus shifts to the newborn, and mothers often ignore their own diet. Deficiencies of iron, calcium, vitamins, and other essential nutrients are common after childbirth. Due to lack of proper nutrition, hair becomes thin, weak, and prone to excessive shedding.
The third reason is stress and lack of sleep. Hormonal imbalance, physical fatigue, and sleepless nights due to newborn care lead to mental stress and exhaustion. Stress is one of the strongest triggers for hair fall and worsens the condition if not managed properly.
To control hair fall after delivery, it is important to maintain patience, as estrogen levels gradually start returning to normal within a few months. A nutrient-rich diet should be followed, including iron, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin C, which are essential for healthy hair and skin. Foods such as pulses, eggs, milk, paneer, soy products, green vegetables, beetroot, and pomegranate should be included regularly.
Light oil massage once a week helps improve blood circulation to the scalp. Adequate sleep and stress management are equally important. If hair fall continues for a long time or becomes severe, consulting a doctor is strongly advised.
