Patiala House Court Allows NIA to Collect Tahawwur Rana’s Voice and Handwriting Samples
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Patiala House Court has given permission to take voice sample and handwriting sample of Tahawwur Rana, accused of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. NIA had filed a petition in the court seeking permission to take voice sample and handwriting sample of Tahawwur Rana, after which Patiala House Court gave permission to them.
Tahawwur Rana is in NIA custody. Last month, the special court of Patiala House Court had extended the National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody of 26/11 Mumbai attack conspirator Tahawwur Rana for another 12 days. The NIA had requested the court to extend Rana's custody, on which after hearing, the court reserved the decision and gave this order. Earlier, Rana was sent to 18-day NIA custody, after the expiry of which he was produced in the court of Special Judge Chander Jeet Singh amid tight security. During the hearing, the agency argued that Rana's custody is necessary to understand the web of the 17-year-old terrorist attack conspiracy and to reach other conspirators associated with it. It also said that it is necessary to take him to different places for investigation.
It is noteworthy that the US Supreme Court recently rejected Tahawwur Rana's petition in which he had appealed against his extradition to India. Rana was brought to India after the review petition was rejected on 4 April 2025. After Tahawwur Rana was brought to India on 10 April, the NIA arrested him and produced him in the special NIA court of Patiala House Court. The court sent him to 18-day custody. After the detention period was over, he was again produced in the court.
