New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Ayurveda has long focused on principles that promote a healthy and disease-free life. It believes that everything we need for well-being exists within our body and nature. In today’s fast-paced life, where stress is high and time is limited, maintaining balance in both body and mind has become essential. According to Ayurveda, understanding and following its five protective shields can help achieve overall health.

These five protective shields include strong digestion (Jatharagni), regular oil massage, a healthy respiratory system, strong immunity (Ojas) and mental well-being. By incorporating yoga, pranayama, a balanced diet, proper sleep and positive thinking into daily life, one can protect the body from various illnesses and improve overall wellness.

The first and most important factor is digestion. A healthy digestive system ensures that the body receives proper nutrition from food. Weak digestion can lead to various diseases. To maintain balance, one should include different tastes in the diet and add desi ghee for better nourishment.

The second is regular oil massage. Along with internal health, external care is equally important. The skin acts as a protective barrier against external elements. Daily oil massage helps improve blood circulation and provides deep nourishment to the skin.

The third is a strong respiratory system. In today’s polluted environment, maintaining healthy breathing is crucial. Regular practice of pranayama and including natural ingredients like raw turmeric, tulsi and amla in the diet can help strengthen the respiratory system.

The fourth shield is strong immunity. Immunity depends on proper nutrition and physical activity. Herbs like shatavari, giloy, ashwagandha and amla are considered beneficial in boosting the body’s defense system.

The fifth and final aspect is mental health. Stress has a significant impact on overall health. Even with a good diet, ongoing stress can reduce its benefits. Maintaining a positive mindset and ensuring deep, quality sleep are essential for mental well-being.
