Mathura (The Uttam Hindu): Celebrations of Holi have begun in the Braj region with Phulera Dooj, marking the start of vibrant festivities. While flower Holi, Lathmar Holi, and Laddu Holi attract large crowds, a unique centuries-old tradition is observed in Phalain village of Mathura, where residents uphold their faith with deep devotion.

Located in Mathura district, Phalain village is known for its ancient Holika Dahan ritual, which reflects the devotion and trial by fire associated with Bhakt Prahlad. The village is often referred to as “Prahlad ki Nagri,” and here Holika Dahan represents not only the victory of good over evil but also faith, penance, and courage.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the Holika Dahan of Phalain is an extraordinary expression of devotion. Around 45 days before the festival, the village priest begins strict religious practices, including fasting, celibacy, sleeping on the ground, and special rituals. He stays at the Prahlad Temple, eats only once a day, and follows a disciplined and simple lifestyle.

On the night of Holika Dahan, after taking a holy dip in Prahlad Kund and performing rituals, a large bonfire is lit. When the flames rise high and the embers glow intensely, the priest walks barefoot through the burning fire or runs across it without fear. This moment is considered highly significant for devotees who gather to witness the ritual.

The tradition is believed to date back to Satya Yuga and is linked to the story of Lord Vishnu’s devotee Prahlad. According to legend, Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap, but due to Prahlad’s unwavering faith, she was burned while he remained unharmed. In Phalain, the priest symbolically reenacts this event each year. Villagers claim that this ritual has continued for centuries and that no priest has ever been injured while performing it.
