New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, health issues related to digestion and breathing are becoming increasingly common. Poor eating habits, irregular routines, constant stress, and lack of physical activity directly affect the digestive system. Problems such as gas, indigestion, bloating, and frequent hiccups are no longer unusual.

Hiccups are a natural bodily response, but when they occur repeatedly or continue for a long time, they should not be ignored. Experts explain that hiccups happen when the diaphragm suddenly contracts, disturbing the normal breathing process. One of the main reasons behind this is improper digestion. Overeating, eating too fast, consuming fried or heavy foods, excessive alcohol intake, stress, anxiety, and even extreme excitement can trigger hiccups.

According to yoga science, there are five types of vital air (vayu) in the body, and Apana Vayu is linked to the lower abdominal region. It plays a key role in bowel movements, urination, gas release, and elimination of toxins. When Apana Vayu becomes imbalanced, issues like gas, constipation, indigestion, and hiccups begin to appear. Apana Vayu Mudra is designed to restore this balance. It helps direct internal energy properly and strengthens the digestive system.

Practising Apana Vayu Mudra is very simple. It can be done while sitting on the floor or on a chair with the spine kept straight to allow smooth energy flow. Close the eyes and take slow, deep breaths for a few moments. Then form the mudra by bending the index finger, joining the middle and ring fingers with the thumb, and keeping the little finger straight. In this position, focus calmly on your breathing.

Persistent hiccups, though they may seem minor, can cause both mental and physical discomfort. Yoga and Ayurveda offer safe and natural solutions to such problems. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Apana Vayu Mudra is highly effective in relieving hiccups and digestive disorders.

The Ministry of AYUSH explains that this mudra activates specific energy points through the fingers. This helps balance the area between the stomach and chest, allowing the diaphragm to relax. As a result, hiccups gradually stop on their own. The mudra also helps release trapped gas and improves digestion.

The benefits of Apana Vayu Mudra go beyond hiccup relief. Regular practice can ease digestive issues such as gas, acidity, and constipation. It is also considered beneficial for heart health due to improved blood circulation. The mudra reduces mental stress, promotes calmness, and strengthens the immune system, helping the body protect itself from illness.
