SC grants bail to 3 in Pune Porsche hit-and-run case amid evidence tampering claims
Pune (The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court has delivered a significant verdict in the 2024 Pune Porsche hit-and-run case. The apex court has granted regular bail to three accused arrested on charges of tampering with blood samples. Those granted bail include Aditya Avinash Sood, Ashish Satish Mittal, and Amar Santosh Gaikwad. They were accused of tampering with evidence to protect the minor accused involved in the accident.
According to the case, a Porsche car struck two people in the Kalyani Nagar area of Pune on May 19, 2024, killing them on the spot. The investigation revealed that the car was being driven by a 17-year-old minor who was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident.
The police investigation alleged that the minor accused's father and other associates conspired to influence the medical examination. It is alleged that blood samples from other individuals were sent for testing instead of the minor's to avoid confirming alcohol consumption. Based on this, a total of 10 people, including Aditya Avinash Sood, were charged.
The Supreme Court noted in its order that the accused have been in jail for approximately 18 months. Considering the lengthy detention and the circumstances of the case, the court decided to grant regular bail to all three accused.
During the hearing, senior advocate Prashant Patil and advocate Abid Mulani argued on behalf of accused Aditya Avinash Sood. After considering the arguments, the court granted bail.
It is worth noting that the minor accused in this case has already been granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board. Among the bail conditions was a requirement to write a 300-word essay on road safety. This decision drew sharp criticism across the country, following which the Juvenile Justice Board amended its order.
