Alarming rise: India now second in the world for chronic kidney disease cases
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The number of patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases in India in 2023 was 138 million, second only to China in terms of number. In China, the number was 152 million. This information has been obtained from a study published in 'The Lancet' magazine.
A study led by researchers from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and other institutions in the US and UK found that the disease was the ninth leading cause of death and killed an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide in 2023. Its prevalence was highest in North Africa and West Asia at 18 percent, South Asia at about 16 percent, and sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean at more than 15 percent.
