Health alert: 8 more medicines banned in Punjab after Coldrif controversy

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu) - After Coldrif cough syrup, the use of eight medicines has now been banned in Punjab. Issuing this order, the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare has said that the manufacturing batch number of these medicines has been cancelled with immediate effect and now their use, sale or distribution will be completely banned. The state government has taken this step on the basis of complaints of adverse reactions in patients after giving the medicines. These medicines were being manufactured by three pharmaceutical manufacturing companies of the state.


Strict instructions to retailers and hospitals:

The government has issued instructions to all drug sellers, distributors, registered medical practitioners, hospitals, and healthcare institutions to immediately stop purchasing, selling, or using these drugs. If any stocks of these drugs are found in the state, they must report them to the Food and Drug Administration.


Drugs that are banned and their common uses


Normal Saline 0.9%:

This medicine, given to compensate for the deficiency of water and salt in the body, is now banned.


Dextrose Injection 5%

This intravenous medication provides water and energy (sugar) to the body.


Ciprofloxacin 200mg

is an antibiotic medicine prescribed for infections of the throat, nose, skin, and lungs.


DNS (dextrose + normal saline)

IV fluid given for hydration and electrolyte balance.


N-2 Dextrose 5% IV Fluid

is used to provide fluids and energy to the body after surgery or injury.


Bupivacaine HCL with Dextrose Injection is a

pain reliever and energy booster, which has now been temporarily banned.


Three pharmaceutical companies under scrutiny:

The Health Department has received complaints about batches linked to three pharmaceutical companies in the state. Samples have been taken from their production facilities and investigations have begun. Officials say the ban on these products will remain in place until the investigation report is received.


The Health Department

has appealed to the public that if anyone has these medications, they should not use them and report them to the nearest medical store or administrative officer. The government states that public health protection is a top priority, and any negligence will not be tolerated.
