Former Champion Medvedev Furious Post-Loss, Breaks Racket and Slams Umpire
New York (The Uttam Hindu): The last Grand Slam of the year, US Open, has started with a big upset and high-voltage drama. On the very first day of the tournament, former champion and 13th seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia was eliminated after losing in a sensational match. Frustrated by this defeat, Medvedev lost his temper after the match and smashed his racket on the court and broke it, the video of which is now going viral on social media.
In the first round match played on Monday, Medvedev faced 51st ranked French player Benjamin Bonzi. In this tough match that lasted for five sets, Bonzi defeated Medvedev 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 0-6, 6-4 and knocked him out of the tournament. This defeat not only disappointed Medvedev but also made him angry and as soon as the match ended, he slammed the racket on the ground near his chair until it broke completely.
Even before breaking the racket, Medvedev was furious with the umpire during the match. In fact, when Medvedev was trailing 4-5 in the third set and Bonzi was just one point away from winning the match, the game was interrupted due to a photographer. On this, the chair umpire gave Bonzi a chance to serve the first serve again, which made Medvedev furious.
He had a heated argument with the umpire and started shouting at the camera. Due to this uproar, the match was halted for 5-6 minutes. Surprisingly, after this drama, Medvedev made a strong comeback and won the third and fourth sets, but in the decisive fifth set, he could not maintain his rhythm and lost the match. Now Medvedev is sure to be fined heavily for this act.
