Hong Kong Sixes: Kuwait stun India by 27 runs, Uthappa out for 0 and Karthik for 8
Hong Kong (The Uttam Hindu) – The Indian team suffered a major defeat in the Hong Kong Sixes Tournament 2025. In the match played at the Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok on Saturday, India was set a target of 107 runs to win, but their entire team was reduced to 79 runs in 5.4 overs. This is a major failure for India. This defeat also prevented the Indian team from reaching the quarter-finals. This team was formed under the leadership of Dinesh Karthik.
In the match, the Indian team won the toss and decided to bowl first. Kuwait's score was 51/4 after 4 overs but in the last two overs, the Indian bowlers gave away 55 runs, due to which Kuwait's team was able to reach the score of 106/5. Dinesh Karthik gave away 23 runs in his over. Then Priyank Panchal gave away 32 runs including 5 sixes in the last over. These two overs proved to be the turning point of the match. For Kuwait, Yasin Patel scored an unbeaten 58 runs in just 14 balls, which included 8 sixes and 2 fours.
The Indian team got off to a poor start in the run chase. Robin Uthappa (0) and Dinesh Karthik (8) were dismissed. Priyank Panchal (17), Abhimanyu Mithun (26), and Shahbaz Nadeem (19) contributed. Mithun hit three consecutive sixes in the last over, but by then the match was already out of India's hands.
Twelve teams participated in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament. These teams were divided into four groups of three. Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Pakistan, Australia, England, Afghanistan, and South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals. The most successful Hong Kong Sixes teams are South Africa, Pakistan, and England. All three have won the title five times each. The Sri Lankan team also won the title twice. India, Australia, and the West Indies have won the title once each.
