Karnataka crash: Training jet goes down in Vijayapura, pilot and trainee injured
Vijayapura (The Uttam Hindu) : A major plane crash occurred in Karnataka's Vijayapura district on Sunday afternoon. A Redbird Aviation training jet crashed near Mangalore village in the district's Baleshwar taluka. The pilot and trainee pilot on board were seriously injured and were immediately admitted to a nearby hospital.
According to preliminary information, the plane began to sway mid-air near the Kalaburagi area during takeoff. The pilot attempted to land safely, but lost control and crashed into a field near Mangalore village. Upon receiving information about the accident, local police and administration teams arrived at the scene and began rescue operations.
The police have launched an investigation into the crash, suspecting a fuel shortage as the cause of the crash. Initial investigations suggest fuel shortage as a possible cause, although this has not yet been officially confirmed. Police officials say the exact cause of the crash will be revealed only after a technical investigation is completed. Redbird Aviation has not yet issued an official statement.
The aircraft is reportedly used for flight training. Redbird Aviation is a leading flight training academy in India, using modern aircraft for pilot training. The academy has training centers in Baramati, Belagavi, and Seoni.
The aircraft involved in the accident is believed to be a Cessna 172 SP, equipped with a basic autopilot system. This system provides directional control, altitude maintenance, and navigation assistance during flight. Investigating agencies are currently investigating whether technical failures played a role. Police say they will take necessary legal action once the investigation is complete.
