New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Following the lead of private companies, state-owned telecom company BSNL has now launched its eSIM service in select circles. Until now, only Airtel, Jio, and Vi (Vodafone Idea) were offering this service. eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that works like a physical SIM card and provides better connectivity on smartphones that support it. If you have a phone like the Apple iPhone, Google Pixel, or Samsung Galaxy S series, you can also take advantage of this feature.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of eSIM?

The biggest advantage of an eSIM is that it doesn't run the risk of damage or wear, unlike a physical SIM. However, it's important to exercise caution when using it. If you accidentally delete it from your phone's settings, your phone will immediately lose network access.

How to apply for eSIM?

BSNL: BSNL users will need to visit their nearest customer service center to obtain an eSIM. They will then complete the KYC process using their Aadhaar card.

Jio: Jio users can apply for eSIM from the MyJio app or by visiting the nearest Jio store.

Airtel and Vi: Airtel and Vodafone-Idea users can apply through their official apps. Alternatively, you can send an SMS to 199 using your phone by typing "eSIM

registered email ID."

Complete activation process through QR code

KYC and QR Code: After the application and KYC process is completed, a QR code for eSIM activation will be sent to your registered email.

Phone Settings: Now go to the Settings of your smartphone and click on the Mobile Network or SIM option.

Add eSIM: Here you will see the option of 'Add eSIM' or 'Download eSIM' , select it.

Scan QR Code: Now select the 'Use QR Code' option and scan the QR code received in your email.

Confirmation: You will then receive an IVR call confirming your request.

Activation time: This process can take approximately 2 to 4 hours to complete. Once the eSIM is activated, your physical SIM will lose network access.

As per TRAI rules, no SMS can be sent or received from your number for the first 24 hours after eSIM activation to prevent SIM swap fraud.
