Sanchar Saathi in action: 6 mobiles blocked, 4 traced every minute, DoT reveals stunning stats
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Indian government's initiatives towards digital security now appear to be bearing fruit. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released fresh data regarding the 'Sanchar Saathi' platform, which has been in the news for some time, which shows how effective this technology is proving to be for the common people. According to the information shared by the department, with the help of this portal, an average of 6 suspicious mobile phones are being blocked every minute. The speed of action can be gauged from the fact that this system is tracing 4 mobile phones every minute. Not only this, there has been great success in the recovery of lost phones, where 3 lost mobile phones are being recovered every 2 minutes.
The Sanchar Saathi platform's utility extends beyond simply blocking phones; it has become a powerful tool in curbing cyber fraud and fraudulent calls. Through this platform, users can directly report any suspicious calls, messages, or WhatsApp communications received on their phones. Upon receiving a complaint, the department investigates it, and if fraud is confirmed, not only the number is disabled but the handset's IMEI is also blocked, preventing reuse.
Additionally, this portal is proving helpful to police and investigative agencies in locating lost or stolen mobile phones. If a user loses their phone, they can block the phone's IMEI number using their details and a police complaint. This renders the phone inoperable, and its location can be traced as soon as a new SIM is inserted. Another important security feature on this platform allows anyone to find out how many SIM cards are active in their name. If a number appears on the list that doesn't belong to the user, it can be immediately reported and deactivated. Additionally, when purchasing a used or second-hand phone, people can enter the IMEI number through this portal to verify whether the phone is genuine, fake, or stolen.
