India Opens Salal Dam Gates After Baglihar, Water Released Into Chenab River – Video Surfaces
Srinagar (The Uttam Hindu): Amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, a significant development has come to light. After opening the gates of the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, India has now also opened several gates of the Salal Dam, resulting in the resumption of water flow in the river. Videos related to this event have also surfaced, clearly showing the strong flow of water from the dam.
After Baglihar, India opens several gates of Salal Dam, water released into Chenab River; Video surfaced: According to sources, following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India had decided to stop the flow of water to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty. First, dams built on the Indus River, and later the Baglihar and Salal Dams on the Chenab River, were shut down. However, due to heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir in recent days, the water levels in these dams increased significantly, forcing authorities to open the gates.
Two gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project located in Ramban district and three gates of the Salal Dam in Reasi were opened on Friday. As a result, the water flow in the Chenab River has returned to normal, ending the drought-like situation that had persisted for several days.
It is notable that after the Pahalgam attack, India took a tough stance on the Indus Waters Treaty, indicating a possible violation. The treaty was signed in 1960 between then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan, with mediation by the World Bank. It has long been considered a rare example of cooperation between India and Pakistan.
Now, it will be crucial to see how Pakistan responds to India’s move, especially at a time when relations between the two countries are going through a highly tense phase.
