Kathmandu (The Uttam Hindu): The mass uprising in Nepal against corruption and the ban on social media has spiraled into a full-blown political crisis and near civil war. The entire nation, including the capital Kathmandu, is engulfed in violent clashes, arson, and chaos. With the situation completely out of control, the Nepalese Army assumed command of the country on Tuesday night.

The most shocking development came with reports that former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli fled to Dubai after resigning. A video released by a Nepali air hostess from the airport claimed that Oli boarded a flight to Dubai, allegedly with the Army’s help. The video quickly went viral on social media, further fueling the anger of protesters already raging against the political establishment.

According to media reports, Oli sought the Army’s assistance to leave the country, citing medical treatment as the reason. A Himalaya Airlines aircraft was reportedly kept on standby for his departure.

Meanwhile, violence escalated dramatically. Protesters set fire to Oli’s private residence, the Presidential Palace, and the Supreme Court building. At least 22 people have been killed and more than 400 injured in the clashes so far.

The mob also targeted homes of other former prime ministers — Sher Bahadur Deuba, Jhalanath Khanal, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. In one tragic incident, Rajlaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former PM Jhalanath Khanal, succumbed to burn injuries after her house was torched. Sher Bahadur Deuba was reportedly beaten by demonstrators inside his residence, while Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel was chased and assaulted on the streets.

The Nepalese Army issued a statement condemning the violence, saying that “anti-social elements are targeting civilians and government property”. It warned that looting, arson, and vandalism in cities like Kathmandu would be dealt with “with the strictest action”. Citizens have been urged to stay away from violent mobs.
