New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): These days, Indian Railways is writing a new chapter in technology and speed with high-speed trains like Bullet Train and Vande Bharat. In this era of modernization, electrification, and AI, the Railways is breaking new records every day. But have you ever wondered how heavy a wheel of the train you travel in is and where it is made? Today, we are going to tell you some such interesting facts related to the wheels of Indian Railways.

Where are train wheels manufactured?

Indian Railways offers a prime example of the 'Make in India' initiative, where train wheels are manufactured primarily at two locations in the country. The Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is an integrated factory that produces not only wheels but also axles and complete wheel sets. Additionally, the Rail Wheel Plant (RWP) in Bela, located in Saran district, Bihar, also produces wheels in large quantities, playing a vital role in maintaining the speed and smooth operation of the country's trains.

Additionally, a new forged wheel plant is being established in Gummidipoondi, Tamil Nadu, to promote self-reliance and exports. Work is also underway in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, to manufacture wheels for high-speed trains, eliminating import dependence and ensuring indigenous production of wheels for trains like the Vande Bharat Express.

Weight of a wheel: 300 to 500 kg

The weight of train wheels depends on their type and use. According to data from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), electric engine wheels are the heaviest, weighing around 554 kg, while diesel engine wheels weigh around 528 kg. In contrast, the wheels of a normal coach weigh around 384 kg and those of an LHB coach weigh around 326 kg. Actually, the wheels of an engine are made stronger and heavier to pull the entire train, hence they are heavier than those of normal coaches.

No Compromise on Safety

Safety is a top priority on the railways. Strict protocols are followed to ensure the strength of the wheels. Every 30 days, the wheels are thoroughly inspected. If any wheel shows even the slightest defect or wear, it is immediately replaced to ensure passenger safety.
