Bangladeshi ‘Guru Maa’ held in Mumbai for 30 years of illegal stay on fake documents

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): In a major action, Mumbai Police has arrested Jyoti, a Bangladeshi transgender known as 'Guru Maa', who was living in India for the last 30 years with the help of fake documents. This case came to light when action is being taken against Bangladeshis living illegally in India for the last few months. In March 2025, Shivaji Nagar Police had arrested some Bangladeshi transgenders from Rafiq Nagar. Jyoti was also detained during this time, but at that time she had all the Indian documents including Aadhar card and PAN card, hence she was released.


Following this, the police investigated Jyoti's Indian birth certificate and other documents, which were found to be fraudulent. Following this, the police arrested Babu Ayan Khan, alias Jyoti, alias Guru Maa. According to police information, Jyoti's real name is Babu Ayan Khan. She was the "Guru Maa" of over 300 followers and reportedly owned over 20 homes in Rafiq Nagar, Govandi, and other areas of Mumbai.


According to the police, several other cases are also registered against Jyoti at the Shivaji Nagar, Narpoli, Deonar, Trombay, and Kurla police stations in Mumbai. Currently, the police have arrested her under sections of the Passport Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. The Mumbai Police stated that this arrest serves as a major warning to those who are illegally residing in India using fake documents. The police are investigating how many people are currently living with her. They are also trying to find out where she obtained the fake documents and for whom she has obtained them.
