New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Irregular lifestyle habits and unhealthy eating patterns are leading to common digestive problems. Many people experience heaviness in the stomach late at night, indigestion, frequent burping, or burning in the chest. Ayurveda offers simple solutions for these issues. Experts explain that after evening hours, the digestive fire becomes weaker. Eating late, consuming oily or fried food, sitting for long hours, stress, and using mobile phones late at night are major reasons behind nighttime digestive discomfort. Ayurveda says that a few basic ingredients available at home can help relieve these problems.

One of the most effective and fast-acting Ayurvedic remedies is warm water with ajwain and salt. Experts recommend drinking a glass of warm water mixed with a pinch of ajwain and rock salt or black salt about 30–40 minutes after dinner. The thymol in ajwain helps release trapped gas and reduces bloating. It also helps improve sleep quality.

The second remedy is warm turmeric-ginger water, a natural anti-inflammatory drink. It is especially effective for people who experience acidity or chest burning at night. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder, half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice or grated ginger, and a teaspoon of honey (optional) in a cup of warm water. Drink it slowly 40–50 minutes before sleeping. Turmeric helps reduce inflammation, ginger activates digestion, and warm water relaxes the stomach muscles.

Along with home remedies, lifestyle changes are equally important. Dinner should be light and eaten early, preferably between 7–8 PM. Avoid curd and refrigerated cold food late at night. Do not lie down immediately after meals, and switch off your mobile at least an hour before bed. Walking for 20–30 minutes daily and drinking warm water in small amounts through the day also helps.

According to Ayurveda, these issues arise due to aggravated vata dosha and weak digestive fire. Spices like ajwain, turmeric, and ginger help balance vata and support healthy digestion. These remedies are generally safe, but consulting an Ayurvedic doctor before trying them is advised.
